Kenya: Sh12 Billion Moyale Road 40 Percent Done, Reports KeNHA

Posted on : Friday , 5th December 2014

The Sh12 billion Turbi-Moyale Road is 40 per cent complete, the Kenya National Highways Authority has said

The project is the third and last phase of the Mombasa-Nairobi-Addis Ababa Road Corridor Development project. Kenha said movement of goods and services will be enhanced once the project is completed.

The project, financed by the African Development Bank, was started by President Mwai Kibaki in October 2012. It is expected to be completed in December next year.

Once complete, the road will have significant impact in regional integration, spur trade, promote growth of towns and enhance social economic development between Kenya and Ethiopia, Kenha said in a statement yesterday.

The road is expected to open up new trade opportunities between the two countries and spur development in semi-arid areas.

Resdient Wario Halakhe told the Star the completed section of the road has created business opportunities and heightened security. He said residents relied on trucks for transport but several buses are now operating on the route every day. Halakhe said schools, banks and hotels are coming up.

Meanwhile, Kenha has said construction of the Marsabit-Turbi road, linking Kenya with Ethiopia is expected to be complete next April.

The 121km road, costing Sh13 billion is funded by the African Development Bank and the government of Kenya.
